How to write your first e-mail to professors?

Admissions1009-168 Published • 0 comments • 73 views • 2017-05-16 11:01 • 来自相关话题

For e-mailing professors, try to follow the KISS principle - Keep it simple, stupid. The KISS principle states that most systems work best if they are kept simple rather than made complicated; therefore simplicity should be a key goal in design and unnecessary complexity should be avoided. It is advisable to target two or three professors whose research field is much similar to yours.

So, write a very simple e-mail introducing yourself in 1 line, stating clearly in your email, your name, country, university with its academic status, and your academic achievement, with attachments of your CV and research proposal. Further emails afterwards can include certificates, publications, awards, and other documents upon requests from the professor.

Finally, I would end by thanking the professor for their time and saying that you look forward to hearing from them. Through out the e-mail please be polite and do not try to brag about yourself. Since I like lists of things, below is a list of things you should and should not do!

Your email should:

Have an informative subject line
Be concise
Be formal: Dear Dr. Smith; Sincerely, Your Name
NOT use Mrs. or Ms.
NOT have slang, abbreviations, or emoticons
If applying for an opening:
address any qualifications the professor is looking for
demonstrate your experience
If asking for a research opportunity:
state specifically your interest in that research group (you need to read the professor's website and a few recent papers)
explain why research is important for your goals
ask to schedule a meeting in person or Skype or say that you will be coming to office hours if you're on campus
NOT write the same e-mail to 10 different professors (i.e. spam them)
Follow up quickly when they reply requesting recommendation letters or scheduling a meeting time.  View All

We have received some feedbacks from students who complains they fail to apply oneline. In general, most of issues they met are:

1. Not received the confirmation letter
2. Have filled out the application form online. But the teachers said they have not received.
3. Not able to upload documetns.

To solve the first problem, you're suggested to check your spam or junk box or registered e-mail spelling first. If the problem still exist, please send an e-mail to help@admissions.cn to ask our customer servicer to active your account.

To solve the second problem, you're suggestd to check if you have finished all your mandatory items. In most occassions, students are found not uploading their head photos(passport size photo).

As for the last problem, we would like to suggest you to use firefox and Internet Explorer(11.0) to log in. Menu selection funcation or upload button may not work in other browsers.
